When a speaker unit needs to be removed from the speaker cabinet, the connections are often made with plugs. Modern speakers often use 'secured plugs'. These are not easy to detach. The plug that slides over the connector contains a click system that prevents the plug from easily sliding loose. However, with these tips the plug can still be easily removed.
Please note: the photos below were taken with a zoom lens. It may be useful to first look at the plug through a magnifying glass before getting started.
Below is a photo of a tweeter. The tweeter is connected by a 'secured' plug. The plug has been pushed over the connection terminal of the tweeter. There is a metal catch on the plug that fits into a hole in the terminal (marked in red). This secures the plug and prevents it from simply being pushed off the terminal.
To be able to disconnect the plug, the plug's catch must be 'disengaged'. To do this, the catch must be pressed out of the recess. Then, with the catch loose, the plug must be pulled out.
It can be difficult at first, but you soon develop a knack for it. The correct actions are therefore:
- Click so that the catch no longer falls into the recess of the plug and then,
- With the lock released, slide the plug off the terminal.
A small screwdriver or pointed object can be worth its weight in gold..
